Energy meter boxes: what buyers need from the mould
An electric meter box protects the energy meter from weather, tampering and fire. In India most utility meter boxes are compression moulded from SMC (sheet moulding compound), because SMC insulates, resists UV and fire, does not rust and holds utility seal points rigidly for years outdoors.
Utilities and their suppliers buy meter boxes in large tenders, to tight specifications and at tight prices. That puts the pressure on the mould: every box must close square, seal against its gasket, take the utility seal and come out of the press without flash that needs hand trimming.
India’s smart meter rollout has added new box designs with space for communication modules, and more three-phase and LTCT boxes for commercial connections. Each new design starts with a new mould.
Meter box moulds we build
What a meter box mould must deliver
Seal points and tamper features
Seal holes, sealing screw bosses and interlocking lips moulded crisp and in the same place every shot, so utility seals fit.
Gasket groove and IP rating
A consistent sealing groove and flat mating faces so the box meets its IP rating with the specified gasket.
Hinges and latches
Hinge knuckles, latch hooks and lock points that do not crack in service, with radii and draft set in the DFM.
Thin flash at the shear edge
A tight shear edge so boxes leave the press with minimum trimming, which matters at tender volumes.
Window frame accuracy
Frames that seat the transparent window or reading slot without gaps, so dust and water stay out.
Logos and ratings
Utility logos, ratings and warning symbols engraved by EDM so they read clearly on every box.
Single phase vs 3 phase vs LTCT meter boxes
| Single phase | 3 phase | LTCT / CT operated | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Homes and small shops | Larger homes, shops, small industry | Commercial and industrial connections |
| Box size | Smallest | Larger, more terminal space | Largest, room for CTs and test terminal block |
| Mould type | Single or 2-cavity | Single cavity | Single cavity, often multi-part |
| Key mould features | Seal points, window frame | Cable entries, earthing points | Internal ribs and mounting bosses for CTs |
Box sizes and features follow each utility’s specification; we design the mould around the drawing you are supplying to.
Materials and mould design
Most meter box bodies are moulded in flame-retardant SMC; smaller parts such as terminal covers can be DMC. Transparent windows are usually polycarbonate and injection moulded, so we tool the SMC body, base, cover and frame around them.
Every mould starts with a free DFM review: draft, wall section, shear edge, charge placement and press tonnage are checked before steel is cut. Read more about compression moulds and the moulding process.
