Draft analysis map of an SMC enclosure base from a Prime Tools DFM report
3.7% of one enclosure base's surface was under 0.5° draft. Found and fixed in DFM, before tooling.

Problems are fixed on screen, not at the trial

Flash, cracks, blisters and non-fill are mostly designed in before the first trial. Every part gets a DFM and feasibility report that checks:

  • Draft on every wall, rib and boss
  • Wall thickness and material flow
  • Venting and ejection
  • Parting line and shear edges

How your mould is built

Core and cavity are cut in-house from the approved design, then fitted and trialled by the same team.

  1. Mould cavity being machined under coolant

    VMC machining

Roughing and finishing on our BFW VMC, programmed from the approved mould design.

  2. Vision Electro EDM machine in the Prime Tools tool room

    EDM & wire cut

Fine ribs, slots and sharp internal details.

  3. HMT surface grinder used for mould plates

    Grinding

Plates and inserts ground flat and square on our HMT surface grinder.

  4. Ejector side of a mould with support pillars

    Fitting & blue matching

Engraving, fitting and blue matching by hand, by people who care how the mould closes.

  5. Assembled compression mould with its nameplate

    Assembly

The mould is assembled, nameplated and readied for trial.

  6. Multi-cavity compression mould on the press with the charge being loaded at trial

    Trial & delivery

First-off parts approved before handover, then the mould is wrapped, loaded and sent to your press.

Project: SMC enclosure base and lid

  1. DFM review. Draft and wall-thickness analysis on both parts before tooling.
  2. Two compression moulds. Core and cavity for the base and its matching lid, built in-house.
  3. Trialled at 400 t. The base mould was trialled on a 400 t press.
